Abstract

Abstract

An important facilitator of our daily lives, the İnternet, offers some disadvantages especially for young generations. Some of the problems can be named as İnternet Addiction or Problematic Internet Use. Problematic İnternet use can cause some negative social, psychological and academic consequences and an individual can display cognitive or behavioral symptoms. Problematic İnternet use and its relationships with several variables have been investigated and this research also aims to evaluate problematic İnternet use of young people in terms of family related factors. Considering families can be both a risk factor and a protective factor for problematic behaviors of young people, qualitative and quantitative research investigating family features and problematic İnternet use was selected for this study, and descriptive content analysis was conducted. Results show that risk factors regarding family life (low family functions, inconsistencies in communicational processes, high conflict levels, perceived low social support etc.) can be related with problematic İnternet use. Therefore it may be beneficial to provide help and training to families in order to prevent and interfere with problematic İnternet use of young people.
